Don't wear a belt (or be prepared to remove it), I got thru with buckles on the kilt OK, remove the sporran and sent it thru the scanner, yes, of course no knives - heck, not even nail clippers, try not to wear shoes with a lot of metal on them and leave off any kilt pins.
Other than that, I get lots of compliments flying in a kilt, even from airport staff (in Australia).
More advice for travelling...LOCK your cases/bags before they leave you for the conveyor belt. Although USA is one country that demands bags be left unlocked for inspection....they can take a flying leap.
