    Flying while kilted.

Has anyone had a recent experience of flying while kilted. I was wondering how the good people of the TSA deal with kilted men. I gather that you have to send your sporan through the Xray machine and of course you could not take your sgian dubh. But what else? Do they just pass a metal detector wand up and down the front and back of your body?

I know that a man in a kilt should be treated the same way as a woman in a skirt, but are we? Just asking, I don't have any imediate travel plans. I will be taking one of my UKs to belize this summer, but I probably won't wear it on the plane - too much metal with all the buttons.

yes, didn't you read my post?

Don't wear a belt (or be prepared to remove it), I got thru with buckles on the kilt OK, remove the sporran and sent it thru the scanner, yes, of course no knives - heck, not even nail clippers, try not to wear shoes with a lot of metal on them and leave off any kilt pins.

Other than that, I get lots of compliments flying in a kilt, even from airport staff (in Australia).

More advice for travelling...LOCK your cases/bags before they leave you for the conveyor belt. Although USA is one country that demands bags be left unlocked for inspection....they can take a flying leap.
trust no one with your luggage, remember Schapelle Corby.

I have one particular kilt which I have occasionally worn while traveling, and the buckles on this kilt invariably set off the metal detectors. The wanding procedure, at least in the airports where I've been wanded, is to stand with feet about shoulder-width apart, one foot in front of the other. They pass the wand down in front of the apron, then in the rear. You then switch to the other foot in front.

The metal clip fastener on my garters also sets off the detectors, so if I'm wearing flasher, I usually remove them also.

    Regards,
    Mark

I would also be concerned about kilt pins. Make sure to store them in your carry on, or they may be confiscated.

I actually flew in my Utilikilt Original this weekend, no kilt pin, and was pulled for random check. I was suprised (though in retrospect I shouldn't have been) that I had to stand different so they could wand my kilt.

I flew kilted this last December and even though the only metal on my body was my glasses and kilt buckles I set off every metal detector. In Ireland and England it resulted in a quick wanding in front and back but here in the States it was quite a bit more gymnastic! You put your left foot in, you put your right foot in then they do the hokey pokey and the shake it all about! It wasn't really all that bad, but it did take a little extra time to deal with TSA agents confusion about how to go about things.

I had the same issue! it was actually kind of amusing cause the TSA agent was unsure of what to do will her apparently remembered his training. LOL
