Here's a thought... I've always followed Hamish's advice and not worn a tartan tie with a kilt, leving the kilt, as he put it, to get all the glory. But with a three button jacket like that one (most are one or two-button) and a five button waistcoat, not that much tie actually shows, and there's a lot of jacket/waistcoat between the kilt ant the tie. With all that separation, I might be tempted to wear a tie in the same tartan as the kilt.
Just a thought.
Did you purchase the waistcoat to go with the jacket? It looks smart, Graham.
Tartan tie?? that is heresy, Hank, ban this fellow immediately!! Hamish, did you hear that??
actually, I did think of that too. The waistcoat is in the deal, which I thought was good. I won't wear it to the wedding, it will be too hot.

It is a great looking jacket. You should do your DD proud, Graham. You'll put that model to shame, too, no doubt. ;)

You are too kind Sherry, I'll do a review of the jacket when it arrives. I've had an email to let me know it's been shipped.
that level of communication is always a good sign.

Graham,
I am sorry but I have only just stumbled upon this thread - am still trying to catch up after my Cardiff visit ...... and my continuing unreliable connections with the Internet!!
Yes, I agree the jacket and waistcoat DO look smart but, personally, I have never liked wearing waistcoats under jackets (nor do I like to see them with the jacket taken off. It is the backs of them that are so awful!!) All through my working life I wore double breasted suits to avoid the wretched waistcoat but, of course, a double breasted jacket just would not 'work' with the kilt. I have a couple of potaines which do look good with the kilt, but these are more like sleeveless jackets really.
To answer your question: yes, I believe that with so little shirt showing, the notion of matching your hose colour with that of the jacket is a good one, and it will be particularly effective in charcoal. If however you ever choose to wear the jacket without the waistcoat, I should recommend reverting to matching hose and shirt if possible. As always, there are no strict rules and you must wear what YOU are comfortable with - as long as it does not offend in the eyes of others!
Finally: tartan tie with a tartan kilt? NO, no, no! Never! No matter how much tweed there might be separating the two. Now that WOULD offend!! ;)

Yes, sorry Graham - I missed that point.

That's not quite what I was saying but, on reflection, yes charcoal hose and jacket alone would work very well. I am not so sure about the charcoal tie however - too much charcoal perhaps - although it would still look neat, especially with a plain white shirt. My preference would be for the tie to be in a lighter shade of grey, such as the one that might be worn with Morning Dress, just for the contrast. If you decide on a charcoal tie, please make sure it is exactly the same shade as the jacket. Since tie and jacket are so much in close proximity, a slight difference will be much more noticeable. If in doubt, go for the light grey.

Just a thought...isn't it odd that a man wears the same color to get married as he does for a funeral? Coincidence?
yes I am single...

Personally, I really like the look of a waistcoat, and wish more men wore them -- and I think they especially add a lot to a kilt ensemble. So I'd wear it, even if it were rather warm. If the temperature grew too hot, I'd remove the jacket and still wear the waistcoat -- in my mind, having the waistcoat on adds an extra level of sophistication.
I do agree with Hamish on one point -- I really wish they'd do the backs of the waistcoats properly, from the same material as the front. I have a tartan waistcoat that a dear old lady made for me, and it is tartan front and back. I always get compliments on it.
Sometimes if you ask the company you are ordering your waistcoat from, they will agree to make the back out of the same cloth (for a fee!).
I also have to (respectfully) disagree with Hamish about the tartan neck tie. I think a tartan tie is fine to wear with the kilt, though I stress it is important that it actually match -- as in the cloth comes from the same mill, so all the color tones are exact. But with a five-button vest, I've even been known to wear a tie in a different tartan. However, I would only recommend this if you have a very good eye for matching patterns and color tones. Which is why, for most people, recommending a solid color tie is the way to go. :-)
Aye,
M

Thanks Hamish, I am honoured to have such fine advice available to me, and more still from Matt, making it a double honour (a double...good idea, slainte)
I'll go for the grey tie, and in cooler weather, yes I like a waistcoat, even without a jacket.
Weddings and funerals, KiltedBishop, I agree. I'm only wearing this stuff out of respect for the wedding party.
My personal choice for would be colourful kilts, jacobite shirts, celtic long dresses for the lassies with bright ribbons, flowers in the hair etc. and that's for the funerals!! woohoo!!
