Thanks for the clarifications all. I can see that black is definitely a more formal color and given that ghillies are usually worn formally, I now understand the original comment.
Note to self, no brown ghillies after 5:00 and no white kilts after Labor day... :-D

Nice Dale,
Sadly, not a word about width...amazing what's happened to the shoe business.

Should you ever happen to be in Scotland during the summer and at a Highland games, you might find used Ghillie Brogues. The last time I was there, one vendor had a huge box of reconditioned, re-soled Ghillie Brogues for about $25 a pair. I know that this pre-supposes you're in Scotland, but it's worth keeping in mind. And I'm sure someone enterprising on this forum could make a profit by buying a bunch and re-selling them!!

That's not the end of it, Ron! Here in the United Kingdom, it is the unavailability nowadays of half-sizes in shoes/boots that gets to me. Having a perfect 9½ sized foot (and a perfectly turned ankle to match!!!), I find I am either crippled by having to buy a 9 or am obliged to wear insoles, etc. if I buy a 10.
Oh, by the way, I DO have two feet and two ankles ;)

Aye Ham,
'tis SO SAD to see technology overwhelm craftsmanship and service in so many areas.

Can I use these shoes for dress purposes?
They're brogues, not ghillie brogues though...

Robin,
I do use them for dress occasions, and find that no one says anything to me about it. However unfortunately, I am not known for my great fashion sense.
