Any News on Stillwater's 2006 Line

At 24" overall length, Stillwaters are too short for me, but they're the right length for my one brother, and are a good price for an introductory kilt ... if they had something he would like. (He has similar feelings about Black Watch that I do - we really don't feel "entitled" to wear it.)

The more you know about kilts, the more the Stillwaters look good.

Until receintly I thought 24" was total length of a kilt (and for a Still Water it is), but made to measure kilts are to the top strap. This makes SW's actually 22.5" with a 1.5 rise, not 24". So while a SW still may not fit some of you guys, they are made for shorter guys than many of you think out there.

At 6' my kilts have a fall of 24" plus the rise. But this brother is 5'9" - right height for a Stillwater. Then there's our other brother, who's 5'7". Too bad I'm the only kilt wearer of the three, and a tiny bit tall for a Stillwater.

How much "too short"? Kilts worn below the middle of the kneecap just look wrong to most people. On the other hand, up to two inches above the top of the knee cap generally seems to be acceptable. So if you dont feel uncomfortable wearing them that short, go for it.

As to Blackwatch, just think of it as Hunting Grant. Or one of the half-dozen other clans that use it as their Hunting sett. Or I think it's Campbell that uses it unmodified as a clan tartan.

Hey Wompet, can't be too bad, you're not dealing kilts yet

Whole point on the Stillwater length is the simple fact that people come in different sizes. I'm 6' too, but wear a different kilt length than other 6' kilt wearers (back in my panted days I wore a 30' inseam pant...short legs compared to my top half)

SportKilt finally broke down and offered custom length kilts and I bought more after learning the hard way that one size doesn't fit all.

Stillwater folks are nice, but still politely suggest that its up to me to have their kilts altered by local folk (as if I had any) who don't know diddly squat about kilt construction.

I, as the customer, chose what to spend my money on. I still chose not to spend money on a kilt that I have to significantly alter after I get it.

Just as the Stilwater folks chose not to enter the part of the kilt market that requests custom lengths.

Utilikilts use the concept of "chopping" a kilt. If they have one in your waist size, but its too long, they'll chop (shorten) it for you for a fee.

Maybe there's a niche market for someone to chop Stillwater kilts for a fair fee.

I wish that SWK would either sell longer kilts or offer their Nightstalker tartan fabric by the yard. I like the tartan, wouldn't mind having a kilt in it, but, obviously, if it doesn't fit Wompet, it sure won't fit me and my 39" inseam.

Does anyone know of a source for that tartan by the yard? Or is it exclusive to SWK?

Nightstalker is a SWK exclusive if I remember correctly.

I must say, it's funny to hear people referring to the SWK's 24" length as being 'too short'. I'm 6'2" tall, with a 34" inseam (when I wear pants). Wearing the Nightstalker that I picked up some months back at belly button height, it's perfect length for me. If anything, it's about a half-inch long, coming low on the kneecap instead of right in the middle. So someone 6', unless they have extremely long legs for their height, should be just fine.

And by the way, the material used is great. Comfy, good swish. A little light for these Minnesota winters, and a bit light for heavy winds, but a perfect summer kilt. A darn sight more comfy than the 9yard wool great kilt I'm normally wearing in summer, I'd have to say. :smile:

All in all, an excellent kilt, especially for the price. Can't wait to see the 2006 line.
