I don't see the sgian dubh as a "ceremonial" thing - mine are functional tools, and I rarely go anywhere at all without a flashlight, a firestarting tool (matches or a lighter), and a knife (including a sgian dubh or a Gerber multi-lock).

I am fortunate in that I don't live somewhere that's so backward as to deny their citizens the right to cut open cardboard boxes or slice fruit and/or cheese and/or bread with whatever tool they choose to carry.

I make my own "sgian don'ts", knife handled bottle cap openners. They are safe, legal, and to me generally more useful than a knife. Here's some pictures

If you do any wood working they are pretty easy to make.

    Cheers

    Nice!

Since I don't drink, and I do a lot of stuff with rope, leather, and wood, the knife is far more useful to me than a bottle opener.

Being you are in London I believe the law allows you to wear your sgian as long as it is a part of your highland dress. As for myself I am never without one, no legal issues here in Colorado. I also have had a real blade made as most you see are not servicable as blade.

That is hickory, specifically it was part of a hammer handle. I haven't made an ebony one because...well...I don't have any ebony
