    Gordon has 3

    "Bydand" - Remaining, or Abiding

"Animo non Astutia" - By Courage not Craft

"An Gordonach!" - A Gordon! Probably the rallying cry.

    Serva Jugum

Translated as "Keep the Yoke", based on story of a farmer and his two sons who were plowing fields near where Scottish King Kenneth III fought the invading Danes in 971. The Danes broke the King's men. Seeing them flee, Hay snatched up a Ox yoke and, with his sons, rallied the Scots and defeated the Danes.
(Summary of history on Clan Hay website).

My forum name comes from the Hay battle cry: A Hay! A Hay! A Hay!

    Interesting thread.

We also have "Do Well and Let Them Say...Gordon!" although "Animo non Astutia" is my preferred.

Both the Gordon, and the Muir motto has been posted already.

BUT, I have also heard Bydand as being interpreted as "Standing Fast" from one of the Gordon video tapes I have.

Too bad Animo non Astutia isb;t on the badge, I rather like that one.

I also like to think that the translation of the Muir motto is fairly direct, but then again, it is a translation of Latin, I believe. Although I am still learning more about the Muir side of things...since this is newer information to me.

Bydand is also regularly given as steadfast, but recent investigation by the Gordon Highlanders Regiment has produced the theory that Bydand is a contraction of the Old Scots "Byde and Fecht", which means "stand & fight". Totally believable when you look at clan history!

The wife's Johnston/e is "Nunquam Non Paratus" which means Never Unprepared, or "Vive Ut Postea Vivas" (Live, that you may live in the future) for the Caskieben Johnstons. The slogan is Ready, Aye, Ready! The other slogan is "Light thieves, all".
