    Dryburgh Abbey

Today's Court sitting finished early enough to enable me to call in at Dryburgh Abbey on my way home. The Abbey was founded around 1150 and was largely destroyed by the English in the 16th century, but thanks to the Earl of Buchan in the late 18th century, and later Historic Scotland, the remains have been conserved.

The area where I am standing would have been inside the original Church.

    Church from the Cloisters

    Kilted in the Cloisters

In another area of the Church

    From the Grounds

Another section of the Abbey from the grounds

    In silhouette

And in late low afternoon sun

    And back in the cloisters.

From above the Chapter House, looking over the Cloister wall into the Church.

A gable wall of the Church

The same gable viewed from the Cloisters.

Looking through the entrance to the Church

The doorway and stairs from the Cloisters up in to the church.

We conclude this short tour with a view of a 19th century tombstone in the Abbey's burial ground.

    Great pics Alex!

The winter sunshine makes for some very striking colours and textures of the stone. Hope you and the missus are keeping well.

Thanks, Cessna, I enjoyed the tour.

There's grandeur even in the ruins; I can only imagine how lovely the abbey must have been before its destruction.
