Actually, it doesn't need to be wool for what I'm wanting to do with it. I am wanting something very light weight, cotton would be fine, just so long as the tartan patern is right. (Gordon Modern)
Most of the events we go to are in the summer. I live in the south and heat is a real factor. And since I'm not looking to make a historical garment as I would wear for SCA, I don't think wool is needed.
Hope that helped.

One might consider then ...
Write or call James at Sportkilt and find out if he can send you some of their lightweight fabric, which considering your location and needs sounds like a god match.
CT - and he's a nice guy to boot.

Have you looked at The Scottish Weaver?http://www.thescottishweaver.com/woolplaids.html
They have a Gordon that looks like a modern in 10/11 ounces/yard wool, 60'' wide with selvedge, for $35.95 a yard. They also have tartans in cottons, synthetics and blends that I did not look through.
Everyone who comments on it seems to say that it is not the weight of the wool fabric that causes a person to heat up in a kilt in the summertime. In fact, they all say that the lighter fabrics are less suitable because they tend to wrinkle more and loose their shape in the heat and the humidity.
