I"ve got another one planned out in my head
and have everything I need on hand
I could probably be talked into photographing the progress of the next one at various stages of construction, if there would be any interest to the board.

Umm... I dunno about here at XMarks, but I'd bet there'd be interest somewhere like TheFantasyForums.com or even on the IBRSC. Worse comes to worse... I could post your work on those forums for you!

That targe is truly beautiful!
I really like the use of the different sized tacks

It's funny to see your compass as I did the exact same thing to cut out my plywood and leather.
To space the tacks out, I used a peice of string attached on a nail in the center, with the tack locations marked on the string with black marker. After that I simply spaced the tacks evenly between my chalk lines.

I had started another targe but didn't finish it as I'm trading it to another Scottish reenactor for a Rawles patent cartridge box.

The center spike is AWESOME....I didn't do one on mine because, they were rare back then and I have no way of threading metal rods. I figured I would get my mental juices flowing and think of a way to do it using recycled materials. I guess I need some threading bits

BK... I highly recommend investing in a half-way decent tap and die set if you plan to do any metal work of this sort.
I personally can't get involved in such metal work, as of yet. My family and I live in government quarters, so I am limited on what "toys" I can have.

Where'd you find the leather Joe, and how much did it cost? I need to sand the edges smooth on my cores, and dig up leather for the front. All the other tidbits (boss and whatnot) can wait until AFTER I get the core covered and everything else secured.

I can only speak for myself, but I bought a whole hide at Tandy leather for about $60 which was enough for 2 targes with some left over for other projects.
I also highly suggest you start looking for/buying upholstery tacks NOW making sure that they're the good quality ones as opposed to the cheapos that will fall apart on ya

Couple of tech Q's for you tho... How did you thread the spike- a welded bolt or milled down and threaded? Or other?!
Also what sort of thickness is the boss (candle stick base)? Do you intend to use this fine piece or have it as a handsome adornment on your wall?

I ground down the threaded portion of the 3/4 inch bolt to 3/8" and then rethreaded to 3/8x16

The brass is 1/8" thick and there is a second heavier brass cup soldered to the underside to add strenght.
I have a heavier piece that I'll use for a boss one the next one

The Targe is built to be battle ready,but I plan to carry it around at reactments.It will also look good on my walll
I used to do rapier combat in the SCA but my knees won't let me do that anymore
