Kilts and cold weather

Loving to wear my kilt and wearing it regimental to boot I am wondering how one goes about protecting the boys from frostbite!

Any good ideas?

Hey, flyingscotsman, welcome back! You've been MIA for quite some time.

For those days on top of the San Francisco Peaks in January, long johns under the kilt should do the trick, like this fellow illustrates.


Any other time, though, as several guys have already mentioned, there's enough material in all but the flimsiest kilts to create a cone of warmth (especially with a wool kilt). The one exception to that would be a very windy, kilt-lifter kind of day that could "ventilate" your kilt. As a general rule, though, as long as you keep your head, feet/hands, & torso warm, your legs & "boys" will be perfectly comfortable in surprisingly chilly weather. And as a fellow Zonie, I can vouch for the fact that unless you're planning on skiing at Sunrise or the Snow Bowl on a really cold day, you'll be fine AZ can be in a kilt here.

Long Johns hardly solve the question asked about climate and regimentality

Perhaps you can modify a pair of thermals so you have only the leg left--that would still be regimental.

But . . . there has to be some extra long hose / socks available somewhere that will go over the knee. Here in SoCal though, it rarely gets cold enough to warrant such measures. So far, I have found a kilt and hose to be sufficient.

Skiing is not an activity I would do kilted myself after my *** over tip experiences in Norway a few years ago!

Well I didn't want to call them leg warmers, lol. I doubt I'll ever have need of such things meself.

For the legs, I suggest some thick wook kilt hose. Should work well. As for skiing in a kilt...I find that (especially at speeds I like to ski), a kilt becomes little more than a parachute trailing behind you, leaving your bits and pieces exposed to the freezing wind, snow, and stray ski pole!

I'm not even going into the perils of wiping out while skiing regimental at any speed in a kilt...bad bad bad things...

The photo was only meant to show how some folks deal with cold weather while kilted.

The rest of my post assured flyingscotsman that, even in the coldest regions of Arizona (Flagstaff & the White Mountains), Arizona's climate is year-round regimental friendly!
