David,
I have to admit that I have never actually rolled one of my kilts for travel. I don't fly very often, so I usually am able to hang the kilt in the back of the car, or lay it flat. I usually hang it in a garment bag with my jackets and shirts -- my garment bag has two ealstic straps that fasten across all your clothing and that keeps things pretty well together when on the road.
But, in theory, I don't see why rolling the kilt should be any different with box pelats than with knife pleats.

Kilt-rolling only works well if the kilt is very straight, i.e., if there's little taper in the pleats from the hips to the waist.
