There was a recent TV feature on a gardener from Fife who has successfully grown bananas in the micro-climate of his sheltered garden, but yes they are very unusual here unless in heated greenhouses.

I got a whole bunch of banana trees in my yard, you guys can have mine. They grow like weeds over here.
