Heart to Heart with my wife

Over the holiday's my Wife and I had a chance to have a very productive discussion about each of our views on kilt wearing. Unfortunately it took an argument to help us have that discussion, but thankfully we had that argument.

The significance of the kilt is engrained in me from my childhood because of the value placed on heritage and family pride. After trying my first kilt , I added comfort to the list of reasons. These are sentiments that I simply assumed everyone would appreciate or understand but that is not the case. My Wife did not have such a instinctive fondness for Scottish dress and was caught by surprise by me wanting to wear the kilt as modern daily clothing.

Without going into all the details of the past year and a half, I'd like to take a chance to tell my Wife, I appreciate how far you have come since I sprung this whole thing on you. If you felt your opinion didn't matter to me, I'm sorry for that. It does. I only hoped your opinion would match mine. Maybe. One day. I can wait. I love you.

Everyone may wonder why such an open dialogue. Well, after our discussion this weekend, my Wife took the time to learn more about kilts by looking thru the forum to try and understand more. She started with posts by me, so you know she didn't get much helpful information. Next time I'll suggest a few by some of our resident experts like Matt and Todd as well as some of the wives who choose to share their opinions.

    Gentlemen, To my Wife

My heart goes out to both you and your wife and I sincerely hope your wife will come round to realising that there is nothing unusual in the 21st century about a man wanting to wear a kilt for everyday clothing. Comfort and heritage are important. Kilts for men are becoming much commoner, thanks to Utilikilts and polycotton and acryllic kilts. Until four years ago I wore kilts for country dancing and on special occasions. A leg injury in January 2002 kept me out of trousers for a few weeks and forced me to wear a kilt to work and I was favourably surprised how well it was received by staff and customers and people I met going to and from work. After my leg healed I continued to wear the kilt regularly, maybe one or two days a week. The coming of cheap acryllic and polycotton kilts and non-traditional styles means there is now a suitable kilt for every occasion from the most casual to the most formal. Kilt wearing is now the norm for me and I haven't worn trousers since Christmas Eve. Though I do still wear trousers occasionally, my wife is happy that I mainly wear kilts. A husband dressed comfortably is going to be happier in his surroundings and therefore a better companion. Hope this post helps.

I am lucky that my wife endorses my kilt wearing. So with time & patience, I am sure that your wife will see the joy that kilt wearing give to you, & she will be more tolerent of it.

It's nice to hear of a partner that is willing to look at your side of things as well as feeling secure enough in the relationship to express their own feelings.
    Congrats to both of you!

My wife and I have had a few of those!

Between Christmas & New Years we were down in Williamsburg,Va. and she told me that she is getting more comfortable with me out with her while I'm in a kilt.

Small steps still get you to your destination.

to both of you for taking the time to sit down and talk instead of going to a full blown, high level, loud and non-productive argument. You both have a better idea of the others position now and I am sure that you will find a resolution to the differing views.
