How low should it go?? Sporran that is.

Seriously, not all kilts have the same rise and hang. Its typically an aesthetic selection: the sporran should be centered, squaring the area between hips, arms and knees and the chain into a "golden rectangle" with the strap hanging from the hips should form a "smooth" arc. This is, in general, a good 4 fingers or hand's breast below the bottom of the waistcoat or belt but that measure only really makes sense when the waistcoat length or belt is so positioned, viz. the waistcoat length is so selected according to the golden ratio of 1:1.6. This ratio has been considered as a kind of "divine proportion" over the past 4 centuries. Within clothing the center is the naval (belly button) and its considered at its "ideal" following this proportion. (I'm not joking!). Clothing design then balances out from the naval and follows these "golden rectangles" (again, I'm not joking) looking to create balance or imbalance.

From what I was told, the sporran should, be approxinately 3 fingers lower than your kilt belt. That way it is low, but not too low.

One way to solve the dilema is to wear sporran belt loops / suspenders. I find that when I wear them the sporran is just right, whereas it took some finagling with my sporran chain before I got it where I wanted it. The loops / suspenders also work great if you have a beer-gut.

I always wear it right in front of the genitals. It keeps the *ahem* buldge hidden and makes the pocket easily accessable.

Eeeek! Thank you Steve and MacMurdo for the references to my album photos (I have a lot more to add - it is sadly out of date now!) but I have to confess to wearing my sporrans just where they are comfortable - as Andrew states. I have eleven sporrans and they probably all sit in slightly different positions when worn, because of their shapes and weights. As Andrew also states, a "hand's width below the belt" is a good place to start, although I prefer a four finger width below the buckle, which is about the same thing!!

As we always state: there are no rules regarding these points and, since we are all built differently, we really have to find the best positions that suit us personally.

Finally, too low looks plain comical (and uncomfortable!), so if you are going to err, wear your sporran fractionally on the high side, but best of all, find the most comfortable position for YOU.

Wow!! Thanks everyone. So much advise and so many ideas. Does seem to be some agreement about having the sporran worn a bit higher but still functionally covering any possible bulge.

DragonInterrupted suggested suspenders (love your blog, by the way). I made some after seeing them for sale on a website. I agree they work great for me and they are adjusted to fit me but they do make the belt droop some in the front unless I pull it quite tight. I made mine from leather purse handles that I found at JoAnne Fabrics (for less than $7), measured how long I wanted them to hang the sporran and allowed for the width of the belt. Mine are not adjustable (glued them with Crazy Glue (hate that name but is strong glue). Made some in black and some in brown. My adjustment problems have been with the chain. I'll get used to it and thanks for the help. Awesome.

PS I'll take a look at Hamish's photos again. I have seen them many times over the years. Thanks Hamish for the advise and the cool video (sweeping). I did watch it recently and it has helped me enormously to look more casual and poised when sitting down while kilted.

Mine are not adjustable (glued them with Crazy Glue (hate that name but is strong glue).

Be advised CA (cyanoacrylate) glue tends to get brittle over time. Perhaps put a stitch or two in there just in case. Cyanoacrylate? Better to just call it crazy glue!

I tend to use the "four finger" rule. But, I end up more around 3 fingers.
