One of the reasons for the iniquitous region system. 
That's why a lot of folks are doing home theatre PC's now. With most DVD-ROM drives, region coding doesn't matter a whit. Also, if you watch carefully in the discount shops (like Wal-Mart here in the US, or whatever their UK version is for some of you) you'll find that some of the cheaper no-name brand DVD players are region free (but they tend to go quick)
