I like the sporran pretty high up also...3 to 4 fingers mostly.

If in doubt, wear the sporran toward the high side, 3 fingers or so. I have found if it is worn too low the kilt material tends to bunch up above the sporran. This occurs when standing up after being seated for a while.
Wearing a sporran belt allows the sporran to slid toward the side if necessary.

That is another advantage to the chain or belt with the sporran. With the suspenders, if it is worn in the middle (front) then you can't move it to the side without taking off your belt.
