It's become my favourite hat to wear with the kilts. I am looking forward to a new one from him as soon as he gets around to it. I highly recommend them to anyone.

As you yourself have already sussed, the father was insecure about his own manhood. Well handled indeed, treating him with the contempt he deserved by ignoring him, rather than falling to his level. As you have by now discovered the positive experiences of kilting far outweigh the very rare negatives.

If it bothers you, why not ask them (very politely with a smile) to their faces " Excuse me, did you have any comments or questions about the kilt you'd like to share with me?"

It's an easy non offensive way of putting the smack talking dad in his place

As negative encounters go, yours seemed to be very mellow as the people poking fun at you were obviously too cowardly to say anything to your face.

Fuggedaboudit!! They don't know jack about what a kilt is, so it's their problem not yours :-)

Perhaps something along the lines of "Oh! Did you have a question about the kilt? It represents family history, of which I'm quite proud - of course, if ya don't know who your daddy is..." Not subtle, but it gets your message across - go away and get a life!
