I am picking up this little beauty on the 10th of March.




She's an English Springer Spaniel (like Useless from MOTG). The owners have had the family for sometime and brought both parents over from Scotland a year and a bit ago. Great parents, and a really cuddly pup.

My only concern is whether or not my little daughter is allergic (I am, but will suffer through pills for this pup).

Now to try and think of a proper name....

I've had two Springer Spaniels - wonderful dogs but headstrong both of them. As to a name - if pedigreed look at the parent's official names. My last dog was from Guiadera White Lightning and Brixclose Peddler. So a peddler of white lightning had to be a Bootlegger!

Have plenty of chew toys around to "redirect" the little darling's chewing instincts...I finally got the message about that with the last dog and it saved a lot of grief. I used to dislike the look of the Springers but lately I've come to appreciate them...congrats on a new buddy.

The dog's family tree names can be pretty funny. My Golden Beagle's mom's name was "Pure Honey"...hence her beautiful golden color. Dad's name was "Tipton's Ever Ready"...I expect that this was an allusion to his propensity to be ever-ready to make more little beagles...the only thing that this hunting dog hunts is a soft place to sleep. Does yours come from a hunting or companion animal background?

I was allergic to over a hundred substances as a child, including dog and cat hair. Over the course of 10 years, I received intramuscular shots (once a day decreasing to once a week over time) that helped me develop an immunity to these substances. I am largely free of those allergies now and have always had one or two dogs for the last twenty years (plush-coat German Shepherd - Alsatian - now).

That's my background . . . what I really wanted to let you know is that even if you or your daughter are allergic to dogs, you may find that you can develop a tolerance for a specific dog. You'll have the opportunity to develop this tolerance if you can stand the effects of exposure long enough.

The most important symptom-reducing advice is to always keep the dog out of affected people's bedrooms (where you sleep). Our dog sleeps in our bedroom, so that may be tough if you (the adult) want to develop a strong bond with the dog. Good luck, and if you encounter what seems to be insurmountable symptoms, consider seeing an allergy specialist who might be able to offer treatments that will reduce sensitivity to dogs.

A good "Glen" name would be Justine, Stella, Dorothy, or Hermione. Or maybe Sharon, but that's a man's name in that part of Palestine ...

Whatever her name, congratulations on the new addition to the family. And don't sweat the allergies - between pills and shots, most can be managed. Or like Abax and me, you may have grown out of them.

Is she going to hunt? I love springers, so much mellower than other spaniels. I have a gsp named stella, great hunter and so much fun to yell "Stellaaaa".Nice looking pup congrats.
