A really great film, it comes on one of the movie channels often, and we always ask each other why we don't own a copy.

Here's Mrs. Zardoz giving ya'll the lazer eye in her Brown tartan sash.

In my Netflix cue now, as well.
Truth be told, I've never seen Billy Connelly in a serious role. I just know him as one of the funniest human beings on the planet.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

I have seen him in a serious role, but I can't remember what it was. He wore a kilt in that film as well, with a black leather biker jacket I think (his usual attire, perhaps). Obviously it was contemporary and not a period piece like this one, and I think it was set in Glasgow. Anyway, I suppose I should look him up on IMdB to find out.
He always used to have long hair though. I don't know if he cut it to play John Brown, or if he had already cut it.
Of course, he always used to be a standup comedian and he has done comic film roles as well.

First, I have to agree that everythin Dame Judi Dench does is wonderful.
I even liked Chronicles of Riddick. (And respected Vin Diesel a whole lot more when I heard that he refused to do the film unless she accepted the role.)
She is a wonderful actress and Billy should do more serious films.

I have heard that when they were in pre-production and offered the part to Judi Dench, she wanted to know who was playing John Brown. When they told her that they were thinking of Billy Connolly, she replied that if they got him, she'd definately do it...When they offered the part to Billy, he asked who was playing the Queen. When they told her Judi Dench, he agreed. Then they told him that she only agreed because they told her Billy would play Brown. Billy then had the producers tell Judi Dench that she was his second choice, his first being Bob Hoskins (who was in drag portraying Queen Victoria in some phone commercial at the time) IIRC...
Also note the pre- SPARTA!!!! Gerard Butler as Browns' younger brother.

Not sure if this has appeared elsewhere, but here's Brown in the plain grey kilt suit commissioned by Queen Victoria for him to wear as "half-mourning" dress for Prince Albert.

Cheers, Graham.

I have also lately been captivated by this image of Victoria's son-in-law, Henry of Battenburg, and see myself in tweed before long. It just smacks me of gentlemanly elegance, and I think I just might be able to pull it off.
