What's the dumbest thing you ever did?

The dumbest thing I have done lately is debate politics with my father-in-law. When the man doesn't like you very much to begin with, it is never a wise decision to actually tell him what you think. After an hour of his ranting and criticism, I have since learned that it is always a good strategy to nod your head and say "That's interesting", then change the subject. After being married for a few years, I have learned that this is also a good strategy for marital harmony, and has saved me from countless other instances of the dumbest things I could have done.
In high school, I dated yet another girl whose father couldn't stand me (my luck, I suppose). While at their home one Saturday, I decided I would help out with the chores around the house. Knowing that the father took great pride in his lawn and its appearance, and knowing that even I (the bumbling, stupid, adolescent boyfriend) could handle something so simple as mowing the law, I hopped on the riding lawn mower, revved it up, and drove down the driveway to cut the grass in the front section of the lawn. My girlfriend yelled out that the lever on the left lowered the blades, and to be sure to get around the mailbox really well. As it turns out, I (the bumbling, stupid, adolescent boyfriend) could NOT handle something so simple as mowing the lawn. After 20 yards or so, I looked behind me and saw nothing but clumped, mutilated sod and dirt where a beautiful stretch of lawn had once been. The lever on the left, I found out, lowered the blades to different levels, and I had apparently chosen the "Total Grass Annihilation" level. I turned the mower off and promptly left. Needless to say, my relationship with her father was somewhat more strained after that.

I'm getting the opinion that if more than two of us are ever in the same place...something that might qualify for this thread might happen!

I'm sure we can all guess from what you posted...it happened to many of us I am sure ( just not with Jody...we hope)

I was driving a jeep down an (abandoned) dirt road (too fast, of course) when I came around a corner and saw a bridge with a VERY washed-out approach.

As I hit the approach and the front tires of the jeep leapt into the air (and the jeep plunged over the side of the bridge in very slow motion, headed for the stream-bed two meters below) I remember thinking "Oh, this is going to end VERY badly..."

The outcome was better than expected - the jeep was standing on its nose in the stream-bed, I was hanging on to the steering wheel... but had flipped out onto the roof.

I dropped to the ground, pushed the jeep back onto its wheels, it started (thank goodness - I couldn't make contact with anyone on the radio) and I was able to drive out of the stream, through the trees, up on to the road, and back to the motor pool (but only making right hand turns - the bumper was pushed in on the left side so the tire wouldn't turn to the left).

The best part was I managed to have the darned thing fixed at another unit's maintenance facility (same day) so the boss never found out!

Try doing THAT with a HMMWV!

O.K., I'm going to pay for this later. I'm going to say that putting liquid dishsoap in the dishwasher is NOT the dumbest thing Panache has ever done. I'm not telling this story to humiliate him, I'm telling it because it's REALLY funny! I actually think he may have mentioned it already, but probably not in detail.

About a month ago, he was drinking a martini and spilled it on the keyboard of our computer. Now, this was not the stupid thing. After all, everyone is clumsy once in a while. In fact, if our computer was not a portable (with the motherboard under the keyboard) this would not have been a big deal at all. Addict that he is, he was not willing to wait until the keyboard dried out on its own, noooo, he had to hurry the process. So, what did he do but try to dry the keyboard with a blow dryer. THAT was the stupid thing. He actually melted the keyboard.

Suprisingly enough, the computer no longer worked!

Believe it or not, his dad took the computer home and allowed it to dry out, replaced the keyboard and it actually was undamaged. I joke about how the computer was wasted, then spent some time hung over, but after a reasonable time "drying out", is functioning just fine. At least he didn't try giving it coffee or a cold shower to sober it up!

yes, computers do not do well with alcohol...very bad things happen.

it is a good thing the keyboard was rendered useless BEFORE anyone began adding to the forum after a few too many drinks!

Once, on an old KDX motorcycle, I thought I'd try a little freestyling... Like you do on a bicycle. You know, stuff like front wheel stands, bouncing on the front wheel, walking, where you hop from the front wheel to the back wheel sideways, etc.

I actually had the front wheel stands going pretty good. Brakes locked, rear wheel up in the air... And I was hopping around like a demented rabbit.

Until my feet slipped off the pegs.

I skidded forward over the gas tank and in to the gooseneck. The bike fell over and landed on me. I had to have over a dozen stitches on the sporran I was born with.

I've done some REALLY stupid stuff on motorcycles.
