Too much of a good thing?
I bought a Shirt to wear with my Black Watch Kilt. Now I am wondering if wearing a Black Watch Shirt with a Black Watch Kilt is just too much.
I am not good at telling if things work well together, so I am hoping you guys can give some advice.

Some time ago, there was much discussion on this board regarding whether is was appropriate to wear a matching tartan tie with a kilt. According to a number of pundits, this is something that those who know better just do not do. Ergo, a matching tartan shirt will likely be be considered just as much a kilt fashion transgression. Although I can't claim to be a final authority, I might suggest that a better choice would be to select a solid but complimentary color as you might choose a tie. Traditional kilts, as with other fashion categories, seems to have adapted certain general guidelines some of which may not make sense to the casual observer. Just MHO.

I'm with Blu on this one. wearing a matching shirt to go with your kilt would kindof be like wearing a tartan tux.

Will, do you refer to a black shirt, or a black Watch shirt?
I don't see a problem with BW kilt and a black shirt.

Will, a very quick note:
Tartan shirt with tartan kilt? NO! Please don't do it - it would look dreadful! How much smarter you'd look with say, a navy blue shirt (and plain bottle green tie, if you are wearing a tie), OR a bottle green shirt (and a plain navy blue tie!). With these the best 'look' would be to have your hose match your tie in colour.
An alternative would be a beige or natural shirt with similarly coloured hose.
Always try to avoid patterned shirts, sweaters, etc with a tartan kilt. Plain, self-coloured garments above the waist work best, and allow the kilt to take all the glory!

I was referring to a Black Watch Shirt.
Based on everyone's input, it would seem that I shouldn't wear this with a Black Watch Kilt.
How about the shirt with a black kilt? I have a Black Stillwater Kilt and one on order from Freedom Kilts.

That would look good, Will, but preferably with navy blue or bottle green hose - not black - for the best effect!

Just a thought.
A Black Watch kilt and a Black Watch shirt would be perfect for lurking about in the woods...hunting...a very good old fashioned camo.
Maybe with Black Watch kilt hose too...
You'd be invisible in the woods!!
