Brief overview: I had a professor a few semesters back who appreciated my kilt wearing. She's actually leading a trip to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England, and I'll be going along for that trip. I learned today in one of my other classes that she's written a book, and will be having a book signing soon. I had no idea what the book was about or anything, just that she wrote one, and will be having a signing.

So I get home today and see that her name is on the caller ID. I assume it was regarding the trip, so I go check the messages. Nope, she was calling to tell me about the book signing too. She went on to say that the book was on the Scots that immigrated to, and helped build, New York. It's $28 dollars, and the book signing is this Friday.

My first thought "Well, thanks for the info, but I don't think I'll be there since I need to save for the trip..."

But [and you all knew this was coming] here's the kicker. She, and the library staff, want me to be there wearing the kilt. They felt that it would lend credibility to the whole event. And on top of that, I'll be getting a signed copy of the book at a $28 dollar-off discount, and free lunch.

I do hope you won't be disappointed. I was invited by e-mail by the author of a book on the history of Edinburgh Airport. to which I had contributed, to attend his book launch and signing at Edinburgh Airport. There was to be a free lunch. I received an e-mail from him the day before to say the airport weren't allowing him to serve food, but there would still be tea and coffee. On the day about thirty people turned up at the airport bookshop. There was a message that the author of the book was unable to attend the signing, but the book was on display and the bookseller was happy to sell the book at a very slight discount to those of us who had been stupid enough to turn up, and didn't even bother to offer tea or coffee. Your professor's invitation may be well intentioned but in my experience the publisher will control the event, might tell her at the last minute not to bother coming along but won't tell any of the people she has invited, will give you absolutely no free food and offer a minimal discount to get those who were tricked into attending to buy an unsigned copy of the book on the first day. I didn't mind being all kilted up for the occasion as most days I wear a kilt anyway but I wouldn't waste my time and money going to a book launch again. But I think you should go anyway - satisfy your own curiosity and who knows your experience of a book launch might be less negative than mine. All I'm saying is don't hope for too much and you won't be disappointed.

You should definitely go. I have a copy of the book and it is quite interesting. Can't find my copy of it to give you the exact title, but you should go and support her. Where is the signing?

I would hope so. That is some experience. Good luck at the signing and make the best of whatever happens.
