Is there not a motto somehwere :
"Kilts are garments, not costumes" ?
    (Paraphrased from memory)

Would you wear sgian dhus with trousers or shorts?
If not, why wear one with a kilt?

A belt is usefull, a sporran can be useful, sgian dhus are just a nuisance to be kept for fancy dress parades.

I dont really see sgian dubh's as part of a costume, that said I am not wearing one today.

I would not wear my sgian dubh with trousers, and I never wear shorts, however, I do wear a buck,or pocket knife with trousers/jeans.

I totally agree with you now that the sgian dubh should be used as part of a formal outfit, however I would not clasify it as part of a costume, is a tuxedo a costume, or parts of a tuxedo outfit a costume I think not.

Personally, I do wear my Sgian Dubh a lot because I use it a lot. The only times I feel any great discomfort are if it's laced in too-tight.
Try loosening your garters just a little more and see how it goes.

So, you never carry a pocketknife?

Anything pressed into your flesh for an extended time will likely do that. After wearing duty boots all day, I'll sometimes find the pattern of my socks imprinted on my lower calves.

If you try to make your socks/flashes too loose, you risk losing whatever you might be carrying down there.

I know this always turns into a "weapons" issue with our members that live in police states, but I personally can't conceive of not having at least a pocket knife on me! If I wear the hose pulled up, I always put a Sgian in the sock, I think of it as part of the outfit, just like a kilt pin or flashes. I've never run into a problem going into pubs or anyplace else, this is Texas after all!

Honestly, I don't think of the Sgian as a useful tool, I have a few, but only one nice one that has a good sharp blade. I always throw a folder into the sporran. A day never goes by that I don't need a blade for something, either at my job or just out and about. I also carry one of those huge Swiss army knives in my car.
An example; our car club always decorates out cars for the St.Patricks Day parade, this year we zip-tied little flags to our wipers, ( Miata wipers will stay pulled up, away from the shield, then if you run them the flags wave) and somebody brought these foot long zip-ties, out of 12 guys there only my Dad and I had a way to cut them!

I never carry a sgian, they aren't legal here. To be legal a blade has to be less than 3 inches and cannot be fixed. Only folding knives with a blade under 3 inches are legal unless it's an essential tool for your job. They wouldn't make an issue of a sgian if it was part of an outfit for a special occasion though. There is still a certain amount of discression left.

I don't want to risk a hassle about carrying a weapon, so I got a fake sgian dubh from Matt Newsome for about $25. I've only worn it a couple of times but it causes my leg to sweat so I'm going to only wear it for a few special occasions.
I've carried a pocketknife for over 40 years. The last 20 it has been a 4 bladed Swiss Army knife. Handiest tool I've ever had. I don't carry it on airplanes though.
    Just my two cents.

    well dang,

I always thought that indent in my leg helped hold the thing in place....

Have two, wear them seldom since I work in a mental health/criminal justice environment and wouldn't be wise - or allowed.

Do wear them for special occasions.
