Belts or no?

Hi, I just got my first kilt

, and I was wondering if I really needed to get a kilt belt or not..I don't real need one on a practical level considering that it holds itself up fine, but would I look weird not wearing one, and just a sporran?

I wear one, unless I'm wearing a waistcoat.

unless I've got a waistecoat on, I always wear a belt as well.

I would definitely invest in a belt. Not only does a good kilt belt help complete the outfit, I wouldn't always trust my kilt to not falling by just those little leather straps that are currently holding it up for you. I'd hate to see you with an indecent exposure ticket. Many of the merchants that have ad's on this website sell awesome looking inexpensive kilt belts. Check it out!

Many of the Scottish Country Dancers forgo wearing a belt.

A well fitted kilt (like the ones you have made for yourelf) don't need one.

That said, I rather like the look of a wide kilt belt.

I asked a similar question a while back. If the wide belt and waist plate isn't your thing then go ahead wear a normal belt. I think a kilt needs some adornment - sporran & belt, apart from that follow your gut.

There is no reason to have a belt other than looks. If you actually need it to hold your kilt up, your kilt doesn't fit right.

When dressy to formal I usually wear a waistcoat so no belt. The exception to is my doublet which requires one. If i just wear a jacket but no waistcoat then I will wear a belt. For casual wear I usually wear a belt unless I am wearing something that would cover the belt, like a sweater.

Need a belt for a balanced look, except when wearing a vest or loose sweater.

For a nice, inexpensive casual belt, buy a 2" tool belt from HD or Lowes. They are undyed veg-tan, shorten to fit you belts. Get some black or brown leather dye at a leather store or hobby store. 2 coats of dye, some buffing, and perhaps a bit of neutral polish and you're good to go.

Did this and I'm very happy with the results.

AND.....if you didn't have a belt how could you show off your cool celtic buckle?
