Since they've gotten so inexpensive, it would probably be worth his while to get one of those auxilliary hard drives that attaches to the USB or firewire ports and back up his essential files....I'm running three of the things now and it's very reassuring.

An external drive is a definite possibility, or we may replace the PC. It is old and struggling. At the very least we have to reinstall the op sys from scratch. He is currently burning CDs of all his photography, which might take some time . FWIW, even with an external drive, "permanent storage" is a good move. I have personally witnessed a USB drive take a smallish knock and become inoperable. Luckly there was a duplicate.

while that may work, that would seriously impact his Kilt Fund, which we all know just won't happen!
