oh yeah, this is an excellent film, and rather under-appreciated i think. i had to watch it even though no one i know around me ever wanted to see it. i had to see it for all the obvious Scottish reasons, but also because of Judi Dench.
i developed this little rule about movies. certain actors always seem to pick really excellent scripts. i always try to watch movies with Judi Dench and/or Kevin Spacey. and so far i have never been disappointed. at the same time i try to avoid movies with Richard Gere, Kevin Costner, Tom Cruise and/or Nicholas Cage. and ya know... that rule hasn't let me down either!

I'm actually of the opinion that Judi Dench actually won the oscar for this performance and not her 30 sec of screen time in Shakespear in Love.

Well a little more than 30 seconds but the role certainly wasn't a long one!
Her list of nominations and awards is certainly impressive!

Can one of the more techno-talented find a picture of the Brown tartan and post it here, It is a great looking tartan.
I have a neck scarf made of the tartan and have carried the banner at a Kirk'in, it is predominantly red, black and blue.

Brown Tartan
There is a picture of the brown tartan on this website:
www.house-of-tartan.scotland.net
Type in "Brown" in the Tartan Finder.
In the picture the red appears to be maroon, the actual tartan in a much brighter red.
www.clanbrown.com is the clan web site it has a lot of info for you.

A really great film, it comes on one of the movie channels often, and we always ask each other why we don't own a copy.

Here's Mrs. Zardoz giving ya'll the lazer eye in her Brown tartan sash.

In my Netflix cue now, as well.
Truth be told, I've never seen Billy Connelly in a serious role. I just know him as one of the funniest human beings on the planet.

I have seen him in a serious role, but I can't remember what it was. He wore a kilt in that film as well, with a black leather biker jacket I think (his usual attire, perhaps). Obviously it was contemporary and not a period piece like this one, and I think it was set in Glasgow. Anyway, I suppose I should look him up on IMdB to find out.
He always used to have long hair though. I don't know if he cut it to play John Brown, or if he had already cut it.
Of course, he always used to be a standup comedian and he has done comic film roles as well.
