I've worn my Sportkilt out in the winter with no problems. I'm in North Alabama if that helps.

I've worn my 11 oz. during weather that was in the single digits and didn't have any real problem. If I stood still too long, the wind made my knees cold, but as long as I kept moving I was stayed warm. Actually, my hands were the coldest part of my body.

I live in Michigan and my economy Wallace from SWK did well this past winter. Granted our temps didn't get into the single digits (Fahrenheit), but the winds we get more than makes up for it. I actually sweat in the kilt... I do want to get a heavier model, but I can't justify the prices right now for heavier models. Plus, our summers are brutal with the humidity...so, I'll stick with lightweight models for now.

I don't know about Tennessee, but here in Wisconsin, I have to wear my heaviest kilts in the winter. I guess the lightest kilt I could get away with during the winter would be a 16 oz. wool, although I usually stick to my 22 oz. wool kilt during the thickest months...

I know you might be asking about more traditional kilts, but I have often worn my UK in the Smoky Mountains in the winter, and as long as I kept my core (torso) warm, I had no problems. And it gets a bit windy at Newfound Gap! I have also worn my lightweight SWK and it's not too bad, as long as I'm not standing in one place for too long. Good socks and sweaters probably make more of a difference than fabric weight, at least in TN. I would probably not pack my SWK for a winter hike in Minnesota, but Tennessee winters don't get that harsh.
