Well, let's say there a COUPLE different kind of animals:

"Saxony," which is the "fuzzy" stuff and MUCH cheaper. It can be had for between $10-25/yard and up, depending on your source. The WEIGHT varies from very thin (used as a bunting substitute) to rather heavy (used for heavy wool bankets) and various "hands" (the feel and texture of the surface).

Worsted is the "correct" material used for nicer kilts. Typical "kilt weight" is between 13 and 16 oz. Regiments use(d) between 18 and 22oz. Some use lighter (9-11oz), but it does not hold a pleat as well, not "stay down" as well either. 13-16 oz is typically around 50-100/yard, depending on weight, mill, and retail source. Usually, the wholesale cost is only marginally lower than retail (often 2/3 final price or more expensive).

So, a 4 yard belted plaid could be anywhere from $40-50 for cheaper saxony to $400 or more. It ALL depends upon the quality of the cloth and yardage needed.
