Frugal Corner: A REVIEW

I got my kilt in form Frugal Corner today. I ordered it on Thursday, so the shipping was exactly what I expected. Bonus: no competitor labels inside the kilt!

I got a Hunting Stewart 16 oz. with a pin and matching flashes. It is not wool (my first non-wool kilt *gasp*), but is soft and the colors are good. Although it is 16oz., it has a much different feel to it. Not bad, but difference. I guess softer? Out of the box, there are a few wrinkles, but I've been told these come out easily if I hang it in the bathroom while I shower.

After preliminary wind testing (yard work before the thunderstorm came in), I have decided it is wind-capable and the deep pleats hold well. The three buckles are strong and solid, but the fabric holding on the buckles do not match the sett. The apron fringe and reverse pleat look nice. It has a lining just like SWK, which means it is not sewn down on the bottom.

The flashes look good and come with elastic and velcro belts. The kilt pin, however, is iffy. It looks ok, but the actual pin is not pointy, which I fear will put a bigger hole through the fabric. It secures well, but it would be perfect if it was pointy at the end instead of blunt.

Overall, I think this is exactly what I was expecting in a non-wool kilt. It looks good and although the swish factor isn't as high as my other kilts, still feels nice. I think this is a prime starter kilt (especially considering the price!) and is perfect for pub crawls and sports. If the price was any higher, I would say "Just buy a SWK wool heavywieght" but a pin, flashes, and kilt for $76 (with free shipping) made me happy with this purchase.

Now if only they would stock the Gordon Modern....(WINK WINK)

just an aside... i've been told that kilt pins should be mildly blunt. all mine are. this allows the point to "push" the threads aside as it enters the weave instead of piercing a thread and thus damaging the cloth. of course this applies to heavy kilt wool. perhaps acrylic cloth needs something different.

Would you please do us all a favor and weigh the kilt? If you don't have a good scale available you can put it in a plastic grocery bag and take the kilt to the Post Office, supermarket meat or deli counter, or even to another business which does their own shipping.

If you assume an 8 yard kilt one made from 16oz fabric should weigh in the neighborhood of 3 3/4 lb.

Yeah, I'll try to weigh it. Give me about a week or so and I'll post the weight along with photos.

beloitpiper - Thanks for the review. Gordon modern you say...lol we will take a look at that, we have added Cameron, MacDougal, Keith, Buchanan, and Several MacPhersons in the last year so a new one may be a few months off. Although we do have Dress Gordon and are working on Hunting Macintosh.

I wonder if the kilt police will knock at the door if it weighs under 3.75 pounds

I think when we weigh them for shipping it comes close to 4.5 with the box.

I am tempted to quickly run down to the store and toss one in the fruit bin scale. But since I am the owner..what i say here is of litle value when it comes to reviews.

Those Hunting Stewart kilts have a great color to them, I have been meaning to grab one for myself but customers first, I must say though that the Clark/Clergy is a great color and pattern

Hey Mark, don't get defensive. I'm not knocking what your selling, I'm gathering the same information I would need and ask of anyone before buying something.

I am also the owner of a business and my business is kiltmaking. In the kilt world we know and respect the fabrics our kilts are made from.

My customers are told EXACTLY how much fabric is in their kilt. I also know EXACTLY how much my fabrics weigh per linear yard. I know EXACTLY what the fabric content is. It's important to me and it's important to my customers.

People come to this forum to learn and research about their kilts. You won't find many who come here just looking for a cheap deal. If that is what they want they go to e-bay.

So I think my request was well within the spirit of this forum. You as a vendor of another persons product don't know what your fabric weighs so I asked someone who can tell me. I don't think that should not be a reason for you to be upset.

Wizard - I was not trying to be defensive. I was just being tongue in cheek about The Kilt Police.

I am not sure that your statement "You as a vendor of another persons product don't know what your fabric weighs so I asked someone who can tell me. I don't think that should not be a reason for you to be upset." is a fair assessment or comment.

Also your suggestion to weigh a completed kilt - with metal buckles/ leather straps/thread/ lining IS NOT going to tell you its true weight per yard is. unless you use:

Total Weight -(3 Metal buckles + 3 leather straps+Thread Used+ lining)=MTW (Material total weight)

Now tear the kilt apart and measure the material. Divide MTW by Yardage

You now have the true weight per yard..... and a really messed up kilt.

another way would be to ask a few of the folks in here that have purchased yardage to weigh it and tell you the true weight.
