Your pictures reminded me of MY nature hike two weeks ago. I was a bit north of Orillia and went on what was supposed to be a nice hour and a half hike through the shield. Kilted, of course. Well, the mosquitoes were like a snowstorm. When I got to the top of the rocks where the wind kept the mosquitoes away, I took some photos. I noticed there were about ten deer flies on my hands.
I did the walk in about 45 minutes. I had bites all over. My eyelid swelled up as an allergic reaction and I'm still taking meds for it.
The kilted point? Only one mosquito bite just above my knee, that's it for the delicate bits. Shorts wouldn't have cut it. Long pants might have been more sensible but they would have been too hot.
Thanks for all of the great comments.
Kilts are just a good, comfortable, practical garment and I kinda feel like they get a bad rep as far as everyday wear.
I have even done a sky-dive in a kilt and it really wasn't a problem. By the time the chute was out my sporran was doing its second job.
