By the shining big sea water...

The History Channel has a program called "The States," where they talk about each US state. I haven't watched it before now, and it just happened to be starting with Michigan.

It wasn't suprising, really. Michigan is shaped like a mitten and consists soley of the city of Detroit. Oh, and it abounds with natural resources, but let's talk about cars. They didn't even mention the U.P. when they talked about logging, though they did show Tahq falls and a couple other scenes I'm pretty certain were shot in the U.P. Sometimes I feel like a Who.

They interviewed James Earl Jones, who is a Michigander (specifically, from Below the Bridge). When speaking of Michigan's natural treasures, he says "The Song of Hiawatha is all about living along 'Gitchee Gumee': Lake Michigan." Gitchee Gumee is Lake Superior

I guess Yoopers are still the only ones saying YA to da U.P., eh?

It's not unique to Michigan, of course. New York is NYC, and California is LA and SF.

Ah yes, the old war between the "trolls" and the "yoopers" again. For any that have not been to the UP, you are missing an absolutely beautiful place.

In Illinois, you are either from Chicago or from "downstate".

IN "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", Gordon Lightfoot sings about Gitchee Gumee too. At IrishFest last year, I played that song on pipes!

I wonder what that episode on Wisconsin is like...

    Not the same country, but...

    Hi there...

Dunno the program you're talking about, but I do know the phenomenon you're describing.

Being from Australia, when Aussies go overseas, we're asked "so, you from Sydney?".... An island continent the same size as the continental USA, and it only has one city?!

Ah well.. might as well get used to it - I'm sure I'm going to be copping that one a lot when I move to Atlanta.

    cheers

I know the U.P. very well! I dated a girl from Escanaba. I've riden my quad and snowmobile all over up there. It truely is God's country!

I would have thought Mr. Jones would have had his facts straight.. I was reading the crawler on the bottom of this mornings news cast, it mentioned something about Toledo being on Lake Huron..

Now I have met you, you know things from Georgia are bigger! (and I have the pictures to prove it. Of course, I was BORN in Texas,,, but I don't let that get in the way of a good taunt)
