Never a problem as yet here in the San Fernando Valley (CA). And I get lots of very friendly praise from kids in Goth & punk gear! Green hair & dead black clothing, and everything pierced & studded (that's just the guys), yet despite their 'Look" they are as friendly as puppies. Women seem to find it VERY accceptable and are always complimentary.
Have yet to brave the Santa Ana winds - but a brick in the sporran should help.
