The two clansmen standing at the side of the shield are known as 'supporters' in heraldic terms. They are dressed as they may have appeared at the famous Battle of the Shirts or Blàr-na-Leine in
1544 between the Camerons and MacDonalds vs the Frasers. Because of the extremely hot weather that day, the combatants cast aside their belted plaids and fought in just their shirts and jerkins. It was the style of that day in the Highlands to tie the shirt tails between their thighs.
I thought 1594 was the earliest documentation of the "belted plaid?" Some things you just have to take as a grain of salt.
