Proscription plaque 1746 from MacPherson Museum

Proscription plaque 1746 from MacPherson Museum

I was doing my typical Saturday afternoon Scottish research via the internet today and ended up at the clan MacPherson UK page (I have some Gow ancestors) . I have been there before several times and was aware of their link to their museum page.

My mission today was surf there museum page because they might have as many as 150-200 pictures of MacPherson & Scottish related historical items online for the viewing.. it's a must see site because they have so much from the Jacobite rebellion.

I came across a reproduction plaque from the 1746 banning of Highland Dress, in other words "TARTAN." I knew that many of you all would like to see this, so I'm posting a link:
    Proscription Plaque

Here's a link to the MacPherson museum page.

    Cheers,

    Daniel S. Williamson

What a great tribute to a Clan, the museum is terrific and the website makes it accessible to a lot of people. Many Clans could take a lesson from the MacPherson's.

The mention of banning the sgian dubh is misleading though. If it is part of traditional dress it is allowed.

Yes, that bit was very misleading.

As was the bit about the sgian dubh being worn on the leg because the kilt had no pocket . What do they think a sporran is ?
In times past , a man's sgian dubh was hidden , hence it's name , often under the arm (in the armpit ), and was placed out in the open , in the legging/boot top , when visiting , as a mark of respect to the host .
Women often hid theirs in the waistband of their apron or similar.
As I was taught it anyhow .
    cheers ,
    QM

Very interesting, I wonder how many people were sent off to plantations for 7 years for violating this.

I actually could not read the declaration. Is there a link to the transcript?
