My Dad spent about an hour discussing these dust storms last night and being absolutely fascinated.

Naah, Iraq doesn't have cactus, or at least not where I've been over there. And those dust storms make me glad I'm from Tucson.

Do you remember Pancho's Mexican Buffet in north end of the Metrocenter loop? Or the Smittys on 35th & Peoria? Garcias?
Memories...

I never went to the Pancho's buffet in Phoenix, but we used to have one out in Mesa on Country Club and Southern. My mom used to steal their sofapia's by putting them in her purse. As a kid i used to love raise the little flag to get them to come over for stuff. I used to drink my water super fast just so i could raise the flag to get them to come back and fill it up.
Anyways the storm was awesome. I was out playing poker when the storm hit, and I had to excuse myself from the game to go outside and enjoy it. I probably lost a bit of money while i was outside, and the game kept going, but i didn't care. Rain and storms happen so rare here, that you've got to enjoy them while they last.

The flag and the sopapillas were the best!
There's supposedly a Pancho's in Tulsa, but I'm never down that way -- oh, if only to have one of their sopapillas again -- I know it wasn't authentic, but it was a lot of fun.
Coming from Tornado Alley, storms in PHX were much more impressive -- and the odd twister that did develop always seemed to in the East Valley -- it was odd hearing tornado warnings for Maricopa County and being 30 miles away from it!

No, by the time my parents divorced and we moved up from Tucson, it was already a chain restaurant. But I do remember the ice rink! That area is now a movie theater, and the food court is all floored.

I remember reading not too long ago that they were remodeling Metrocenter, so I imagine it would look nothing like I remember.
But, I did find this video clip on youtube:

Delicious, but not good for the waistline. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopaipilla
