The Horror!!!

I'd like to preface this post by saying that I am not one of those lazy young guys who leaves everything laying for someone else to do.
Having grown up with two elder sisters, an elder step-sister and an elder sister-in-law and NO BROTHERS I learned to cook, clean, wash, dry, sew, iron and everything else that they felt I owed them after so many years of male oppression in the Western World.

Having been injured lately, my Dad took pity on me and decided to do my washing for me.

And, without thinking, included a clean kilt that had been hung over my door to dry after getting caught in the rain.

And it shrunk.
A lot.




I suppose I could wear it low slung like I used to wear my skater jeans when I was a teenager, but I'm really not sure it would work at all.


On the up side, my new Indie denim kilt from Union Kilts should be here tomorrow!

Wow. I've always wondered what happens to a kilt if you throw it in the washer. I'll make a point to never do that.

Oh wow.

If you don't mind me asking, what size was the kilt before, and what size do you think it is now? I kind of thought that with all the stitching involved, a kilt wouldn't shrink all that much. How wrong I was.

Also, what materials was that kilt made of? Who is the maker? And Was it thrown in the washer AND the dryer? (On high heat perhaps as well?)

It was put in the dryer, yes.


It was a 100% wool kilt woven by James Pringle, but I'm not sure who the maker was. I picked it up second hand.

It was a 34" waist and is now about 33" inch waist.
Was 21" drop, now is 18" drop!

He meant well and it really wasn't his fault.
I'm working on something that will be a good replacement, anyway. More to come on that next week.

At least I have 3 other kilts in the wardrobe, one on the way and another being made for me.
That will just have to comfort me, I suppose.



As far as my sisters, one doesn't wear tartan, another doesn't wear skirts unless they are 'punk skirts' and the other two are Butch lesbians.

So I am going to try to help Punk it up with some zips and pins and things.
Then at least it might get some use.

ahhh ok! The way it was folded made it look like it had shrunk even more than that. (Width I mean)

I was told that the width wouldn't shrink too much, due to all the stitching and pleats, but that length would shrink a bit more. Definitely seems to be proven here!

I definitely think it can be "punked up" enough for your sis to wear. Get a favourite band's patch sewn onto the apron, add some big pins, et voila!

Still sorry to hear, it's a wonderful looking tartan too.
