So You're Going To Wear The Kilt To Work
This board has had varied stories of guys wearing kilts at work with a full range of responses from employers.
Over the last three years of my wearing, and not wearing, kilts at work I've managed to have only seven "objections" to my wearing kilts come forth. All of these have been shared with me by either coworkers, or supervisors in private conversations where I've encouraged them to tell me the truth.
So, in the hopes it may help other guys be better prepared for encountering objections to wearking kilts at work here they are.
1. People think you're gay. (Well, what an honor, thank you. I'm proud to support diversity)
2. I don't know if he's wearing anything under his kilt. (That's good, you're not supposed to be looking under there)
3. A friend said she saw you "hanging out." ( I don't think so. That's anatomically impossible for me. I've come to believe that wishful ladies often mistake my hairy, chubby thighs for my bits. Time for an anatomy lesson)
4. People have seen your tartan boxer shorts when you're seated. (Well good, then they know what I'm wearing under my kilt and I always wear something under my kilt when at work)
5. I can't stand to look at him. (Well, then don't)
6. You're just calling attention to yourself. (Ummm, no. But I think those ladies with the plunging necklines are)
7. It looks unprofessional. (Didn't they use that line on women when they came to work in pants in the 50's?)
So, hope these silly thoughts help others be prepared for the fault-finders in their world.

Amusing post!
I couldn't help adding my (completely) unsolicited smart#@& replies:

And that has WHAT to do with job performance?
2. I don't know if he's wearing anything under his kilt.
Said it before, will say it again: Unless you've got mirrors on your shoes, who cares?
3. A friend said she saw you "hanging out."
If I were to "hang out", I just might utilize my god-given "talents", and consider employment of an adult nature.
4. People have seen your tartan boxer shorts when you're seated.
"Hey! My eyes are up HERE!"
5. I can't stand to look at him.
The feeling, could, presumably, be mutual.
6. You're just calling attention to yourself.
And you answered.
7. It looks unprofessional.
So does corporate dwelling upon a timeless & widely accepted garment style... but that's just my opinion.

Ron, thanks for a great list! I've been on vacation. 3 weeks later there are thousands of posts on XMarks. What a prolific forum. Gave up on the backlog and started with your post!

On an uncharacteristically somber note - this is an area where Ron has shown us how to use patience and tact. A man who has no issues with his masculinity will not question yours. A woman who has no problems with her sexual identity will not cast dispersions on you for your dress code.
Insecure people are scared and irrational . Just like cows. Generally harmless, but big stupid animals none the less.
Now back to our regular programming.
1. People think your'e gay.
"Well, now that we know what occupies their mindspace, can we move forward?"
"Perhaps the next time 'they' have a thought, 'they' should just let it go."
"OMG! we got those statues to think? WHOOPEE!!"
"That must be because they are real smart. Or something"
"Well, you can't sneak anything past this Mensa Club."
"Projection 101."

What a sad commentary on the current state of dress that such questions get asked of a kilted man, but never of a trousered woman.

In the mid 1960's my mum was a single mom with four kids and she did fight that fight in the offices of Traveler's insurance. The Dyke angle was one that she had to deal with.
Now I reckon they have turned the tables...... But all in all, if that is the worst thing that happens to me all day, that somebody questions or makes assumptions on my sexual orientation based on my clothes, well that is a pretty easy day compared to what some folks around the world are enduring.

Well done Ron - that's a great introduction to the world of kilts at work. As for me I decided long ago that if they won't say it to my face - I couldn't care less what they say behind my back.

One of the things I "enjoy" while wearing a kilt is the opportunity to, for a moment, feel how some slighted group feels. The empathy is a good thing, I think.
I don't want to dwell too long on that since it usually leads to threads being locked (but we have matured since I first started posting here).
Anyway, take a moment and reflect on how sometimes we make those same comments. We don't really consider what the frame of reference must be and how unhealthy that is for our culture/world.
