Some may recall the thread earlier about Glenlivet donating $1000 dollars to a charity for every news caster that wore a kilt to work last year on "Wear a kilt to Work Day".

I thought this would be a good chance to encourage the guys in my office to try something new in a secure environment that they may not try unless they had a good reason to do it.

This is the email I sent to the office:

Here's the email I just sent to my office:

Gentlemen (and Ladies too),

Is crack not just a type of drug to you?
Have you had your fill of "Hungry-butt"?
Does the thought of a wedgie still make the hair on the back of your neck stand up?
Are you a Professional Baseball player who gets paid to adjust in public?
Do you have the legs to wear a kilt?

Then here's a chance to help not just yourself but others as well. Here is an opportunity to raise money for a charity called Direct Relief.

Direct Relief International works to improve the health and lives of people living in developing countries and people victimized by disaster or war by giving support to locally run facilities, hospitals, and programs that provide health services with essential material resources – medicines, vitamins and nutritional supplements, supplies, and equipment. Most of these products are donated to the organization, and in turn Direct Relief International ensures that they are provided in the most secure, most efficient manner possible. Direct Relief International’s dedication to their cause is evident in the fact that less than 1% of financial support received goes to administrative and fundraising expenses.

If you are interested in participating in this event please drop me an email or stop by my cube and I can provide you some information on the event.

Thanks, and up with kilts! 8)

Do date I've not received word that the company is interested in "funding" the incentive portion of the event but that is not really the issue.

The important part is the reaction of the office.

During the past couple of years I've been wearing my kilt to work, I take my share of ribbing butt that is nothing to me. I've also had sincere questions about the kilt and the heritage from several guys. On the day I sent out the email, I had a handful of inquiries about the event. Some were a very timid exploratory "That sounds like fun for the charity (but I can't do it?)", some were "As long as I'm not the only one.", most were "NO", but the great ones were "Sure, why not".

Currently I am working with 3 guys on a possible first purchase. 2 of them I have to admit don't surprise me at all with their interest. They both come from military backgrounds and understand that separating from the herd is not a bad thing all the time. The 3rd is insecure about the whole thing but really wants to wear a kilt he just wants to be sure he's not going to take any heat for it.

The great part is that even though the charity aspect of the idea has fallen through (for now), these guys are still persuing the kilt. One's wife is a bit shocked, so I've talked about my experience there. They all want to make sure they "look right". The right socks, the right sporran, the right shirt, regimental or not... I'm very fortunate to get to be their point of contact that they feel comfortable speaking with about these issues. I owe a lot of credit to the members here who have given me a deeper education on these topics so I can pass them on.

I've spent the past week talking with each one and casually dispelling mis-conceptions and trying to offer wardrobe options for whatever style they may want to present. They are bouncing back and forth about which kilt they want (Solid or tartan). At first a solid felt safe, but I've shown them several general tartans that they seem to like as well. I think the Nightstalker tartan is leading right now but the AK Olive is up there as well.

It's neat to see this from my point of view. Not to be over dramatic, but it's sort of like watching someone learn to read or ride a bike for the first time. That moment when things start to click.

Hopefully the momentum will hold and I'll have 2 or 3 others here on Fridays kilted. I believe once that happens I'll have a couple others. But even if it doesn't happen in the office I know they'll wear them in the off time.
