Will have to check kilted photos of other royal personages to see if they wore their kilt pins the same way. I also note it's the plain safety/diaper pin type rather than the more ornate ones many of us like to display! 
But the Duke was a fashion setter - what better knot in a tie than the Windsor Knot ascribed to him?
