Which is, of course, the primary reason for taxing foreign goods (other than just making money for the government). It's to encourage you to buy domestically made goods.

Kind of shoots the "Free Trade" argument though.

Maybe that used to be the primary reason. Now the government could care less if you buy domestic, as long as they get their share.

Especially here in the States, since we've basically become a service-oriented economy.

I fear we're drifting off topic though and headed for a reprimand...

    Hi Richard,

Just to make sure: Sending goods inside EU are not taxable, right? Because my next kilt will be a UnionKilt and I would like to make sure that I will have no surprise from the dutch custons when it arrive

    An idea on purchasing kilts.

If I were to send a gift of cash to an american xmarker, who then by shear coincidence was exactly the same size as me and again by shear coincidence had exactly the kilt I needed. Could he then send it to me as a gift ?

A gift being sent to a friend as not taxable at customs is it ?

mmm should stop drinking single malts makes by brain sleepy ;)

Yes, he could. There's no saying that various governmental agencies would not see that as dodging your "lawful duty" to pay them their cut of your wealth and charge you with something criminal, though. On the safe side, talk to a lawyer (which will cost you more than just paying the fees - funny how that works).
