A gift being sent to a friend as not taxable at customs is it ?

Here in the United Kingdom, gifts sent from countries outside the EU ARE liable for tax when they are over a certain value. Those sent from another EU country are not. This is probably common across Europe. I thought I had a Government website bookmarked which relates to these matters in detail, but I cannot find it - nor can I remember what that certain value is!

Seem to recall some spanish country was allowing people to login and send a gift of tax free cigarettes to the UK think that lasted a year or so before it was stopped ;)

I guess whichever you do yourll end up paying. here in the Netherlands for example they are talking about adding an extra tax to MP3 players!!

Well I guess the best option is to buy local ;) support the local eco system....
