    Well, Georgia Boot says their kiltie is a brush guard but I suspect it's more of a style thing. It's removable and laces right in over the tongue.

    A lot of boots have those kilties.

    I have three pairs of these, in different colors and they all have them.

    Both pair of my current golf shoes have kilties, and I have one pair of dress shoes with same.

    I think that's pretty good proof that kilties are a style element rather than anything functional.

    I wonder if their original purpose was to wick water away from the shoe? I understand that is one of the reasons for the fringe on western style jackets. The various splits in the leather would provide more wicking area.

    At this point it probably more of a style feature.
