SOKS Burns Night
Ok, it's not too early to start planning a SOKS Burns Night for Friday, January 25, 2008.
Would it be possible to organize one for SOKS at the Scottish Rite in Hamilton? Wives/spouses/gfs?
My brother, Captain the Reverand Donald Gordon Glennie, B.A., M.Div., B.Ed. stabs a great haggis. He is available for the Address to a Haggis and could also do the grace, although Rev should do that one. We'll both be at another Burns' Dinner on the Saturday night.
I could entertain with a couple of Scottish/Burns' songs: The Bricklayer, The Blue Ribbon, The Tartan, A Man's a Man For A' That, My Love She's But a Lassie Yet...Any requests? Uncle Ricky's heard me.
Some very good haggis can be acquired from:
Location: Opie’s Quality Meats, 612 Concession Street
Order issued: January 28, 2003 to cease the preparation and sale of food.
Reasons for the Order: Haggis produced and distributed was implicated as a possible source in an outbreak of E. coli infection.
All Orders were rescinded as of February 1, 2003.
I've eaten haggis from this supplier for years, and it's always been as good as it gets. rotflmao

But how good is that? Why do Scots want to Hurl the Haggis?
These deep questions need to be resolved.
One way to resolve them is to do a Burns night. So, I'm in.

Haggis hurling is an old scots tradition and has nothing to do with the quality of the haggis and everything to do with the amount (excess) of alcohol consumed!

TAE A FERT
Oh what a sleekit horrible beastie,
Lurks in yer belly efter the feastie.
Just as ye sit doon among yer kin,
There sterts to stir an enormous wind.
The neeps and tatties and mushy peas,
Stert workin like a gentle breeze.
But soon the puddin' wi the sauncie face,
Will have ye blawin' all ower the place.
Nae matter whit ye try tae dae,
A'bodys gonnae have tae pay.
Even if ye try to stifle,
It's like a bullet oot a rifle.
Hawd yer bum tight tae the chair,
Tae try and stop the leakin' air.
Shift yersel frae cheek tae cheek,
Pray tae God it doesny reek.
But aw yer efforts go assunder,
Oot it comes - a clap o' thunder.
Ricochets aroon the room,
Michty me, a sonic boom!
God almighty it fairly reeks,
Hope I huvnae pooed ma breeks!
Tae the loo I better scurry,
Aw who cares, its no ma worry.
A'body roon aboot me chokin,
Wan or two are nearly bokin.
I'll feel better for a while,
Cannae help but raise a smile.
'Wis him!' I shout with accusin' glower,
Alas too late, he's just keeled ower!
'Ye dirty thing!' they shout and stare,
I don't feel welcome any mair.
Where ere ye go let yer wind gang free,
Sounds like just the job fur me.
Whit a fuss at Rabbie's perty,
Ower the sake o' wan wee ferty!!!

I'll make sure I have the night free.
Just name the time and place.
Now where did I put that link to Burns' poems?

That would be the link.
"Twas in that place o' Scotland's isle,
That bears the name o' auld King Coil,
Upon a bonie day in June,
When wearin' thro' the afternoon,
Twa dogs, that were na thrang at hame,
Forgather'd ance upon a time.

I usually don't start hurling until about 12 drinks but I'll probably start earlier hen they bring out the haggis!

I really feel enlightened.
Any more enlightenment, and I'll be part of the Illuminati.

BURNS @ the Scottish Rite
Hello folks!
A "Burns Night" at the S.R. might be a possibility. I know there's already a HUGE night planned for Jan. 23 with all the trimmings...BUT don't know what's up for the 25th itself. I'll check when I'm in the Rite next week.
I'll keep you updated, and if I forget, nudge me!
KJB.
