    My first Burns Night

    My Burns Supper Experience.

    Friday.28th Jan 2005,

My first ever Burns Supper and I was feel very nevous about it all. My wife and my children had all been ill in the week up to the date .So I was wondering if I’d og down with somthing before the big night .

I need not have feared I managed to stear clear of all the bacteria and such at home and was ready on Friday for a fine evening.

I had arranged to Meet David Wyllie to help prepare the hall where we where going to have the Cally’s Burns Supper. This was at Eckbo http://www.eckbo.no/ A really nice place on the north edge of Oslo. We had plenty of time so everything went after plan.

We where to be 101 members and Guests and the first begun to arrive around 6.00pm. When all had arrived it was time to assemble in the main Hall for our Meal a most traditional afair with the Haggis as the star turn. The running order for the evening was no doubt standard for all you old hands.
    Top Table was piped in.
    A welocme By the President
    Selkirk Grace
Toast to the King (Harald of Norway)
    To Queen Elizibeth
    To absent Friends
Then the Haggis was piped in and we all stood.
The President ”Adressed the Haggis” and and administered the ”Coup de Gras” where upon it was carried out again and the meal could commence.

Haggis Until this night was known only by name and Reputation. I was however pleasently suprised by both the consistancy and by the taste. In fact I rather went to town and ended up very full(Had to loosen the kilt a notch).

Between the Haggis and the Desert Alf Cranner ( All well known Folk musician and Burns fanatic) delivered a lively ”Imortal Memory”This was followed by a storm of applause and the desert of Whisky moose(Yummy).

After dinner there was a piping receital and Holy willie’s Prayer was read in Dialect and in New Norwegian. This was followed by a thank-you for the food to all the serving staff. Then Finally ”Auld Lang Syne” was sung before the bar was open and the Raffle was drawn.

I was Lucky enough to come away with a ”Famous Grouse ” Sweatshirt from the Raffle . As I was helping to tidy the day after was offered 4 lb/2Kg Haggis to take home .

So now it’s the long wait until next year…..Who’d a ’thought this would all come from me buying a kilt.

    ’Appy Daze!!!

Ps There are some pic's in my Gallery too...Enjoy
    All the Best.....David.

    Freelander & the Haggis...

You've done grand -- an excellent "after-action" report, I must say! And you got to have a Haggis take-away tae boot -- one of the benefits of being involved in the set-up and tear down!

Did you get to meet Lord Caithness?

The piccies were a nice touch as well! Please give Norman my regards, btw.

    Grand...just Grand!

    Cheers,

    Todd

Sounds like a fantastic time David. Unfortunately I notice there is no picture of yourself at the event. I assume you too were dressed in the PC and tank

Congratulations, David! An excellent report of what appeared to be a great evening, and good photos to boot!

Agreed: it's shame we don't see you in all your finery!

I am rather surprised that Norman should wear a belt with his Prince Charlie, however. That's almost as much a 'faux pas' as Jack McConnell wearing a pinstripe kilt on Tartan Day - but not quite!

    Thanks for the comments Guys

    To Todd:

I'm afraid I didn't get to greet Lord Caithness as he had other important business that cropped up just before he was due to come out to Norway

    To Colin and Ham:

Sorry that there are no picc's of myself as you both know I'm the shy retiring kind

They would look like my other PC pictures anyway

    David,

What a great tale and pictures! It was a joy to hear your report, wishing I too could have been with my mate at such a grand occasion!
