Formal Sporran Chains

I've been wanting to make one for a while now. The problem has been finding a quality chain that won't tear up my kilts. If anyone finds a good source please let me know. O'Neille

I'd stay away from anything with sharp corners or edges.

It probably wouldn't be too bad if worn ONLY for formal events. I certainly wouldn't anything like that for daily wear though.

I picked up a few feet of the black chain Stillwater sells a few weeks ago. It seems to be pretty good quality. The finish (maybe powered coated??) has proven to be very slick and fairly durable although I haven't gotten to wear it a lot yet. I am sure there is correct terminology for this but I don't know what it is so here goes: if you think of the link as an oval, the joint is on the end and the whole link is twisted so even if the joint is exposed, it is raised off the kilt material so as not to do any damage. I will try to capture it as a picture:




The only picture of me wearing the black chain is this one from the Celtic Classic. I am on the left. I didn't have time to cut the chain so it is actually doubled over on each side in this pic.



I like the chain quite a bit, but I have yet to find any black clips to match it.

Several years ago, I was at a very formal new years eve party, and there was one other kilted gent. He was about 20 years my senior, and he was quite elegantly dressed in a high-end PC and gillies.

One thing I particularly remember was his sporran chain. It was composed of many different ornate links, but it was mounted on a black velvet backing. It helped to show off the silver (it had to have been sterling) and also had the dual purpose of protecting the klit.

It was really neat. I've never seen one like it again, since then.

Ok... is it too tacky to use the sporran hanger that hangs from the Kilt Belt? Yes, I realize the belt usually isn't worn with a Prince Charlie Jacket, but for anything else kinda dressy? I personally like the hangers that hang from my kilt belt better, but just wanted to know what everyone else thought.

I would not do it but thats me. I would say if you are going this route, then no waistcoat.

IMHO, I don't think the sporran hangers look right for formal wear even if you are not wearing a waistcoat. I think I understand why people like them (although I don't) but I think they better suited for casual outfits.

For formal evening wear, that wouldn't look dressy to me, so I vote No!

Finally got it finished, and I have to say, I love it.
It will be part of my wedding outfit.
