The double windsor(My dad taught me this as a child) is a good looking knot and sucks up a lot of tie ;)
I can always get the tie looking good with this knot. I also have a big neck, so your milage may very. I don't think any other knot will use as much of the tie though.

You beat me to it! I would also suggest the Half Windsor as an alternative, in case you need to use "less" tie than a full Windsor, but more than a Four-in-Hand.

Personally, I can use either a Half Widsor or a Four-in-Hhand, mostly due to my neck size!

Umm, here's a real brute force technique. Not only am I short, but in our band, we have standard black US Navy surplus ties that are regular length. The extra tail on my tie was _really_ long. So, I just tied my tie with a nice big knot, got out a pair of scissors, and cut the tail of the tie off in the back. Because ties are made on the bias, it hasn't raveled yet, and it's been 4 years.

Reviving a Thread!
So what seems to be the consensus on overall tie length? To the top of the belt? To the top of the kilt?

I would say if you are wearing a belt, and not a waistcoat then the tie should be just touching the top of the belt, for kilt wear I like to use a Windsor Knot, as I find that they look great, and has been said use up quite a bit of the tie for the knot.
I found this site with video instruction that makes it very easy to do, they also have a how to on bow ties, which I have found very helpful, as I really do not like clip on bow ties.

My preference has always been tie to top of buckle and tuck the underneath length into the kilt.......
But I like Barbs technique of cutting the excess from the back.
THANKS BARB!!!!

I'm gonna have to learn to tie a Windsor. Even though I'm over six feet tall, I'm tiny- I wear a small or medium shirt. Most of my ties are too long, and children's ties loog ridiculous on a man of my height, so I think the bigger knot is the way to go.
