What is the "proper" width for a kilt belt?

Actually, what is the acceptable range for the width of a kilt belt?

I have a 1.75 belt and think it looks OK, but I do not want to find myself on the "Kilt Don'ts" page some day.

Most guys like wider belts. The 'traditional' kilt belt is 2.25 - 2.5 inches, but I've seen belts as wide as 3" offered by some places. Most guys find wider belts look nicer, and are more comfortable if you wear a belted plaid or phillabeg.

Most of the ones I sell are 2 1/4". That appears to be the most popular size as well as the availability of buckles.
I have had the odd request for 2 3/4 and 3".

For traditional kilt belts, 2.25" is the most common.

In the 2" range there is just such a limited selection of buckles to choose from so for selection I sell more 2.5" than anything.

To further analyze the issue, you can look at the style of kilt as a factor. For low waisted casual kilts you can get by with a 1.75" belt as the visual proportions are kept in balance. Once you go to a kilt with a high waist I feel you really need to wear a wider belt (no less than 2").

I think what looks best depends on the kilt and your dimensions. I wear a 1 3/4 " belt when I am wearing, say, casual USAKs or something similar. Then a 2" belt on more traditional kilts. Anything wider looks out of proportion for me.

Here's what I might wear with a casual or contemporary kilt, for instance. 1 3/4" belt.

I personally think the "bigger" belts are too costumey. 2.25" is about as big as I'm willing to go. The one here is 2".

The belts that I build are typically 2.5" I just have trouble finding the buckles to go with a belt that wide. I dont design them in the "traditional" style that I saw marketed at the St. Louis games. Mine are just your typical holes punched in the belt and then the buckle "peg"fits in the holes to hold it tight. Thinking about building a 2" or 2 1/4" soon because I echo Bradley's feelings about the 2.5 being "costumey"

I've got 2 kilt belts, one is a 2.25 inch one, and the other is a ranger belt style and 3 inches wide. It doesnt 'seem' as wide because it's a ranger belt.

It's the belt i'm wearing in

    http://www.tharkis.com/images/realmenwearkilts.jpg

which doesnt 'seem' wide because of the style of belt. yet it's very comfortable, particluarly on kilts which lack straps / belt loops.
