Yes, Hamish, the towell that way works fine.
. I was referring to those who usually drape a towell over the whole (Leather) seat, cushion & back in hot weather, then just plop down on the towell & try to swivel in, which scrunches towell, pleats etc. into a lumpy mess.

Particularly on cloth seats, where the friction pulls the pleats out of line when you swivel, I find it helps to have a sheet of plastic on the seat.

'Non-cloth' seats do help. I have three Mercs with MB Tex material and they are great for kilt wearing. In fact I think that the MB Tex material is better for kilts than the leather in my wife's E300.

When I drive the 52 MG, there is no way to let the door shield as it has suicide doors. It does have leather seats, so I just kind of back in, sweep, sit down and swivel to face forward. The GMC truck is different as it has cloth seats. I have to climb two steps to get in. Then try to sweep and swivel. Either vehicle has no room for a sporran while driving, so I have to remove it first.

Get in and sit down in the seat (or up into if your choice of vehicle so dictates) as one has done for generations. With feet on floor and shoulders towards seatback, lift up butt and do a regular sweep. Takes but a second or two.

Most of the time I just don't worry about wrinkles, if it’s good quality wool the wrinkles should drop out. But on those times I need to be wrinkle free I wear a pair of shorts to drive, and lay the kilt on the seat beside me. When I get where I am going, I just put my kilt on and step out of the shorts.
