Turpin, are you using the Pipers Hose or their standard kilt hose? I had the same problem with the standard kilt hose which is why I've been on this quest for kilt hose that will fit my large calves. Short of the fantastic Heritage hose, and hand knitted hose form other vendors, these have been the best looking and fitting. The next step down from here are my Hamilton Dry Goods socks which are very nice, but not as thick so you can see skin through them in the darker colors.
Scotty, the sgian is a pretty heavy tool. It will need a snug sock to keep it in place (not a turnicate, but just enough to create some compression on the leg).
Standard Kilt hose. I'd be interested in the pipers hose if they offer a better fit. and come in different colors.

Yeah, My calves just will not fit into a standard kilt sock without a lot of pain and deformation. These have been very comfortable and will be very nice this winter I think considering the thicker and tighter weave. They do come in several colors (Arran, Black, Lovat Blue, Bottle Green, Lovat Green, Grey, Navy). If I didn't mention it earlier, they are 70% wool and 30% Nylon.

I usually wear the same kilt hose. Have a couple pairs of bottle green that I purchased back in '05. Have yet to have worn out heels on them... Recently purchased a pair in navy and a pair in black. Normally get mine from The Tartan Thistle on Whidbey Island, here in Washington state... Thinking I'll pick up a pair in stone, and maybe a pair in gray, so I have a couple more choices. Then I can start retiring my normal kilt hose, which tend to dig into my calves where the turnover is.
Anyway, here's the color selection, as shown on The Tartan Thistle's site: http://www.tartanthistle.com/Piper_Hose.html Price recently went up about $5.00, but they're still worth the $32.99 a pair.
